Primary objective
Under the leadership of the General Manager Life Science, provide supervision to Animal Services and the Monsoon Forest sections at the Territory Wildlife Park and provide leadership to staff on matters relating to animal welfare and play a key role in developing and coordinating research and conservation programs.
Context statement
The Territory Wildlife Park showcases animals and plants of the Top End in both natural settings and in captivity and reflects the diversity of natural habitats of the Top End. At the supervisor level we are seeking staff who are innovative, show leadership and who possess excellent communication and organisational skills.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide on ground support, lead and develop staff and supervise the daily operations of the Animal Services and Monsoon Forest sections.
2. Be the point of specialist advice across the park on animal welfare and aviculture.
3. Act as Duty Manager on weekends, taking responsibility for general park functions, initial emergency management and wildlife rescue.
4. Actively participate in supervisory forums and work on a roster system including public holidays and weekends.
5. Operate within a strong safety culture following defined Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures.
6. Work with researchers, conservation and community groups to deliver on projects across the park and respond to media and film inquiries as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven leadership and supervisory skills with a leadership style that is approachable and visible with a demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and train staff with a commitment to learning and continuous growth.
2. Expertise and proven experience in the 5 Domains of Welfare within a Wildlife Park/Zoo-type organisation and a working knowledge of native mammal and avian health and welfare, and husbandry.
3. Sound working knowledge and experience in Wildlife/Zoo organisations specifically with reference to: wildlife, research and conservation programs.
4. Highly developed organisational, time management and communication skills to achieve results and work within a small dynamic team, support productive working relationships, apply initiative, use common sense.
5. Demonstrated ability to work in a role which requires physical exertion in a hot and humid environment, work rostered weekends and public holidays.
6. Working knowledge of computer programs to produce spreadsheets, documents and reports.
7. Possess or ability to obtain an NT Driver’s Licence and First Aid Certificate.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated captive zoo industry experience with proven leadership and supervisory skills.
Further Information
Immunisation for Lyssa virus will be required to fulfil aspects of this role.
