Melbourne Zoo has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, ambitious and highly motivated leader to drive the strategic direction and operations of the Invertebrates and Birds Precinct. Reporting to the Senior Manager Animal Care and Conservation, the Life Sciences Manager is responsible for the leadership of keeping staff within the precinct, particularly shaping the culture, staff management and skill/career development, animal management and planning, maintaining relevant assets, and ensuring a high standard of health and welfare of animals in the precinct and maintaining excellent presentation of exhibits. Work with researchers, conservation and community groups to deliver on projects.

Candidates must have a genuine interest in conservation and ecology, possess prior leadership experience working with Invertebrates and Birds in a zoo environment, along with knowledge of Zoo Victoria's philosophy and vision and utilize evidence-based husbandry techniques to ensure the positive welfare state of animals. The candidate will be experienced in management of a fast-paced team and have the capacity to continually progress the Precincts conservation, operational and cultural outcomes.

The candidate will have:

  • Qualifications in a zoological related discipline and/or demonstrated experience 
  • Prior leadership experience in managing a large team of zoo keepers.
  • Exceptional knowledge of husbandry requirements of Invertebrates and Birds
  • Substantial professional experience working in a zoo environment.
  • Outstanding time management skills and capacity to prioritize tasks and workload.
  • Experience in project management, managing medium to large projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to engage and work closely with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders and agencies.
  • Excellent communication skills and well-developed problem solving skills.
  • Research and report writing experience.
  • An employee status Working with Children Check for all external candidates
  • Willingness to attain a National Police Check
  • Up to date COVID-19 vaccination status
