About you:

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for our next awesome Plantation/Harvesting Officer within the Wildlife team. The successful applicant will be responsible to assist in maintaining the Lone Pine Koala population by supplying good quality, freshly harvested Koala food leaf. This position reports directly to the Head of Plantations and the Head of Koalas. The role requires a strong understanding of all relevant departmental policies and procedures, with the expectation that all duties are performed in accordance with these guidelines and organisational standards. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with some of Australia’s most unique animals and be part of a motivated and skilled team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Plantation / Harvesting Officer, you are responsible for:

  • Maintaining the highest standards of leaf storage cleanliness
  • Ensuring that the leaf supplied to the Koalas is handled with the upmost care to ensure that when it is fed to the Koalas, that it is in the best possible condition for consumption
  • Ensuring that the amount of leaf collected is of adequate quality and volume to feed our population of Koalas
  • Being observant of the health of any animals you work with and using this information to inform your leaf selection or sorting
  • Identifying and reporting any damage caused to any of the equipment or cars to the appropriate Head of section, and ensuring that all equipment (this includes leaf bins) is in sound and safe condition
  • Ensuring that all cars and plantations are locked when not attended
  • Assist the HOD with any maintenance required to ensure the plantations were ensure theyremained productive. These tasks included:
    • mulching fallen branches
    • being able to assess trees to identify harvesting practices that may impact their
      longevity and productivity
    • assisting with assessing the health of trees
    • assisting with data collection to monitor growth rates of different species
    • assist with collection of branches suitable to be used as perching for koalas and other species
    • assist with installing new perching for koalas and any other koala enclosure maintenance as directed by the curator or koala HOD

    in the HOD's absence, under "higher duties":

    • take on the responsibility of coordinating harvesting locations for all harvesting teams
    • continue to maintain the plantations and provide updates of their state to the curator and koala HOD
    • provide relevant feedback to harvesting teams regarding the quality and quantity of their daily leaf loads
    • ensure chainsaws were being cleaned and maintained correctly

    In addition to the duties outlined in the Plantation / Harvesting Officer position description, you will also provide support to the Koala team onsite, contributing to the continued reputation of Lone Pine
    Koala Sanctuary as a leading institution in all aspects of animal husbandry.

    QUALIFICATIONS, ATTRIBUTES & SKILLS:

    • Certificate III Qualifications Related to Planting & Harvesting or Cert III Captive Animal Management, Bachelor of Wildlife Science (Zoology, tertiary qualification in relevant environmental studies or equivalent experience)
    • Prefer minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role or similar volunteer experience
    • The ability to identify different eucalyptus species
    • The ability to harvest koala browse in a sustainable manner

    • Knowledge of koalas and their dietary requirements
    • Good attention to detail
    • When harvesting, able to assume the role of team leader (see team leader job description)
    • High level of physical fitness
    • The ability to work a range of hours in a range of weather conditions
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
    • Possession of a ‘Can Do’ attitude, growth mindset and strong desire to further develop skills and knowledge both in yourself and amongst your team.
    • Current First Aid certification.
    • Current valid Blue Card required.
    • Current valid QLD drivers’ licence (manual preferred)
    • Ability to safely operate a vehicle with trailer.
