The Alice Springs Desert Park is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Zookeeper - Birds to join our dynamic team. Located adjacent to the spectacular Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, the Alice Springs Desert Park sits in the heart of Central Australia — a region renowned for holding some of the highest diversity and rarest wildlife species in Australia. This is a unique opportunity to work in an extraordinary landscape while contributing to the conservation and presentation of iconic desert mammals.
About the Role
The Specialist Zookeeper - Birds will assist with the daily management, husbandry and planning of the Park’s avian collection, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, enclosure presentation, enrichment, and visitor engagement. The successful applicant will become part of a dynamic and passionate team dedicated to conservation, education, and showcasing the incredible biodiversity of Central Australia.
A standout feature of this role is the opportunity to participate in field work and wildlife collection trips, assisting with the ethical collection of unique native species for inclusion in the Park’s collection and conservation programs. We will support you to learn to mist net and run remote collection trips around central Australia. You will have the opportunity to work with some of the unique species of central Australia. You may also get the opportunity to trap other wildlife using Elliott, Thomas funnel and pit fall trap. Opportunities to work alongside experienced wildlife professionals and scientists can also come up.
