Priam Psittaculture Centre Research & Breeding (PPC R&B):
PPC R&B is a privately owned research and breeding facility focusing on threatened and critically endangered species, in particular Parrots.
The facility is not open to the general public, allowing for focus entirely on the husbandry of species captive management and breeding. This contributes to the successful breeding results continually produced at PPC R&B. The facility has been operating for more than two decades, is continually growing and is a ZAA accredited institution. The collection at PPC R&B includes over 30 species of native and exotic Parrots, critically endangered native rodents and amphibians.
The facility is situated on an open woodland escarpment, located in Bungendore, NSW approximately 30 minutes from the centre of Canberra.
PPC R&B is seeking an individual wishing to pursue a career in the field of conservation, through assistance in our captive breeding programs.
Initial duties in this role will include food preparation, feeding and aviary maintenance. Once the applicant has demonstrated competent knowledge of the species management, overall facility operations and proven to excel in all fields of husbandry, there will be further opportunity to develop skillsets such as animal capture and handling, hand rearing, incubational techniques, record keeping and data analysis.
Attributes and qualities that are necessary for this position include excellent observation skills, attention to detail, strong communication skills, maturity, able to work independently, motivated, able to keep to strict routines and schedules and is dedicated to animal welfare and long-term species survival.
The number of hours offered with this position will depend on the applicant’s availability and may be flexible. However, we are seeking an applicant available for full-time hours. There is a trial period of 12 months and performance reviews will be conducted at 3-month intervals. A permanent full-time position may be offered to a suitable candidate performing to the standard required.
We are looking for a suitable applicant that is committed to pursuing a career in animal husbandry/species conservation/biology. The applicant must have an interest in captive management and be looking for a long-term position. No prior experience with Parrots is necessary as we will provide all training, however experience working with animals or a relevant qualification such as Animal Technician, Captive Animal Management, or a Science Degree is required.
The applicant must be reliable and responsible with a strong work ethic.
The applicant must have their own car and a current driver’s licence, as there is no public transport to or near the facility. The applicant must have a high level of physical fitness, endurance and willing to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions. The applicant must also be available for early starts at 6:30am, available on weekends and public holidays.
