Wellington Zoo partners with Forest and Bird to support Places for Penguins, a local Wellington conservation project. Places for Penguins focuses on coastal restoration, pest control and nest-box building to help Little Blue Penguins (Kororā) along Wellington’s South Coast.
Along with help from Zoo Crew members, Wellington Zoo has built nearly 200 nest boxes for placement in the penguins habitat. While they may not look like the most comfy of homes, a study in the South Island have shown that Kororā prefer the wooden nest boxes to natural sites. All the pairs that used the nest boxes last year fledged two chicks.
Once the boxes are placed, Wellington Zoo and Forest and Bird staff and volunteers monitor the boxes weekly to identify which boxes are being used, and if there are any signs of Penguin use. Wellington Zoo staff have also helped with weeding at Tarakena Bay, where Forest and Bird have planted over 4,000 native coastal plants.
