Port Moresby Nature Park – The ‘Sister Zoo’ Capacity Development Partnership
Port Moresby Nature Park has fast become PNG’s leading recreational facility dedicated to inspiring the guardianship of the country’s animals, plants and cultural heritage.
Key to the development has been the ‘sister-zoo’ partnership with Zoos Victoria, a commitment by both organisations to better the capacity of the Nature Park to align with WAZA Conservation Strategies.
One of key objectives has been the development of a high-level education program. The sister-zoo program has been instrumental in assisting with:
- interviewing of staff
- mentorship to develop program content
- training in how-to market programs
- the development of tools to self-monitor and improve
The sister-zoo partnership of the Education Program cannot be underestimated as this is the ONLY formal, structured schools excursion program currently operating in PNG.
The program success of the sister-zoo partnership has been truly outstanding and includes the growth of the Education Program from 1,587 students in 2012 to 10,587 students participating in 2014, a growth of 567% in 3 short years.
