The Darling Downs Zoo has an opening available for an experienced bird keeper – with some involvement in other precincts and activities of the zoo.
The zoo has an expanding range of native and exotic avifauna and places great emphasis on this area of it’s living collection.
Applicants must have at least 3 years’ recent hands on experience in avian husbandry and management in an avian collection. Please take note that volunteer experience or Certs do not count as hands on experience.
The position involves just about everything involved in keeping avifauna – food ordering, storage, prep and presentation, cleaning everything from food utensils to aviary floors, ponds and fittings, reperching, maintenance of aviary vegetation and aviary surrounds [weeding, picking up rubbish, raking paths etc], maintenance of aviary signage, observation, reporting and recording of all members of the living collection, liaison and collaboration with co-workers, veterinarians, industry peers and management, interaction with visitors, involvement in current species management goals, contribution to forward planning [species, habitats etc] as well as practical abilities such as nest checking, incubation and hand raising if necessary.
The position also involves the giving of keeper talks, occasional media interviews and the hosting of some animal encounters. Your roster will include at least one week-end day.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in at least one other area – particularly Australian fauna.
Please apply with up to date references and covering letter to email@example.com.
Applications close on 28 December 2018.
