Toileting Tips

Cats need to feel comfortable and relaxed while using their litter tray. Read our tips and tricks to toilet train your kitty!

Location: Place litter trays in a quiet area away from food and water bowls. Multiple trays should be in different places around the house.

Number: Two trays is optimal for one cat. Each additional cat needs at least one other tray.

Size: Trays need to be large enough for your cat to comfortably dig, turn around and squat—that’s at least 1.5 times the length of your cat. An average cat measures about 50 cm so their tray should be at least 75 cm long. Commercial trays may be too small but you can make your own using modified plastic storage containers.

Litter: Fill the tray to a depth of at least 6 cm to so they have room to dig. Some cats prefer sandy or clay-based litter while others like wood pellets or crystals. You can try out different litter types to see what your cat prefers.

Cleaning: Scoop out any waste in the litter tray every day and replace the litter once a week. It’s best not to use scented litter or to leave soiled litter for too long so the cat isn’t put off using their tray. No one likes a smelly toilet! Remember to dispose of the waste in a sealed bag in the rubbish bin.
