The Greater Bilby Recovery

The greater bilby—a threatened marsupial once widespread across mainland Australia—now persists only in fragmented populations, largely in Indigenous Protected Areas.
CPSG has been involved in bilby recovery since the 2015 Greater Bilby Recovery Summit. In 2025, we joined the Save The Bilby Fund's initiative in marking 10 year's of progress while continuing work towards the National Recovery Plan for the Greater Bilby. Originally scheduled in 2025, unfortunately, that workshop was cut short due to Cyclone Alfred—but the teams reconvened in 2026.
From 3–5 February 2026, Anne Wignall from CPSG Oceania facilitated the Greater Bilby National Recovery Team and Specialist Subcommittee Meeting and Workshop in Queensland, Australia. Convened with support from Save the Bilby Fund and ZAA’s Centre for Species Survival Australasia team, the meeting brought together 42 participants from federal, state, and territory governments, Traditional Owners and Ranger groups, NGOs, and academia.
Participants have now laid the foundations for a national monitoring scheme, progressed revisions to the metapopulation plan, and developed a decision tree to guide predator control methods.
