Australia Zoo is home to three happy, healthy and very beautiful Asian elephants. Sadly, Asian elephants in the wild are not so lucky. With no more than 30,000 elephants left in the forests of Asia, the population of Asian elephants is rapidly declining. In fact, it is thought that this current figure is less than one tenth of the population of the Asian elephant’s African cousin.
Human–Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka: Schools Awareness Programme
Human-elephant conflicts result in an average of 150 elephant and 65 human deaths each year in Sri Lanka, and a shift in human attitude has been identified as one of the key strategies to address this problem. Auckland Zoo is helping to deliver the ‘Schools Awareness Programme’ to thousands of children in Sri Lanka.
