Orana Wildlife Park: Great Ape Centre
In August 2015, Orana Wildlife Park opened the most ambitious project in its history – a $6M Great Ape Centre for New Zealand’s only gorillas.
The Great Ape Centre can hold two species of great apes (in completely separate areas) within the one complex. Sumatran orang-utans will be added later this year.
Notable features of the exhibit are:
- 72 x five metre high tilt-slab panels form the containment wall
- 453m3 indoor day room with eco chip floor
- 1500m2 outdoor habitat
- Energy efficiency
- Heated floors
- Two outdoor dens
- Customised hydraulic slides and chutes
The addition of the Great Ape Centre now means that Orana can support the breeding program for Western Lowland Gorillas in Australasia by raising awareness on gorillas and providing a home for bachelors.
Conservation messages are delivered through an internationally recognised framework: “Connect, Understand, Act”. This model was developed to provide zoo visitors with the motivation, understanding and skills necessary to take part in actions that lead to a sustainable lifestyle.
Bringing New Zealand’s only gorillas to Christchurch is something immensely positive for local people following the earthquakes.
