Cairns Tropical ZooCairns Tropical Zoo

Location: Clifton Beach, Queensland

Position: Free-flight Bird Show Keeper/Presenter

Cairns Tropical Zoo is situated in one of the most unique and beautiful places in Northern Australia, nestled amongst the foothills of World Heritage rainforest with the Great Barrier Reef at our doorstep. Established in 1980, Cairns Tropical Zoo is the largest and most diverse wildlife park in FNQ. The Zoo encompasses six hectares of landscaped tropical gardens.

The Bird Department maintains over 60 different species of native and exotic birds. Included in the department is a twice-daily free flight bird presentation. The Zoo is an accredited Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) Member and an active participant in a number of Australasian Species Management Programs (ASMP).

The successful applicant will play a role in the presentation of our bird show, and the implementation of animal training regimes for our free-flight bird show. The role will also include work with some non-show birds, and some Australian mammals.

The position requires a flexible attitude and will include work on weekends and public holidays.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL
You are a motivated, punctual, creative team member who displays a high standard of verbal and written communication allowing you to effectively connect with other staff and the public.

You have excellent knowledge of all aspects of animal husbandry, including welfare, health, hygiene, observation, record keeping and enrichment. You have sound knowledge in operant conditioning using positive reinforcement, and good knowledge of the biology and behaviour of Australian fauna.

You display good communication, interpersonal and time management skills, along with the ability to work comfortably within a small team environment as well as independently. You quickly learn, implement and work within the confines of in-house policies and procedures. You think clearly, act appropriately and accurately follow directions. You are passionate about the well-being of animals in your care, as well as inspiring and captivating audiences, and effectively conveying modern zoo philosophy and conservation ideals.

You will also have:
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in training and conditioning;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of flight training, weight management, and appropriate use and care of falconry equipment;
  • Extensive experience in and commitment to deliver dynamic, engaging visitor experiences.
DESIREABLE
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with mammals.

Australian Reptile ParkAustralian Reptile Park

Location: Somersby, NSW

Position: Head/Supervising Reptile and Spider Keeper – Full Time

Reporting to: Operations Manager and Senior Curator

Position Purpose: The Successful applicant will run the Reptile and Spider section at The Reptile Park. This includes duties such as providing a high standard of husbandry and care of the Reptile and Spider collection, exhibit maintenance and design, behavioral enrichment programs, customer service, School education shows, media, record keeping, budget control, and public presentations. The position also requires the successful applicant to supervise other staff in these areas, along with the section’s extensive volunteer program.

The successful applicant will be a strong team player, with the ability to follow instruction easily and without supervision.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with some Australia’s most unique animals as well as many exotic reptile and spider species, including involvement in an AQIS quarantine arachnid facility, funnel web venom production and one of the largest reptile collections in Australia.

Essential Criteria

Australia Zoo

Location: Beerwah, QLD

Position: General Zoo Keeper


Department: General Keeping
Reports to: 2IC - Head keeper – Curator – Zoo Director

Position Description: As a Keeper, your primary responsibility is for the care and well being of animals, particularly those under your direct charter. Zoo Keepers must also understand the importance of physiological needs and physical surroundings of animals under their care. They are responsible for the animal exhibit’s, involved with maintenance and landscaping as well as presenting at daily demonstrations. Zoo Keepers are dedicated to conservation issues and animal welfare, whilst also ensuring their own guest services are at their highest (i.e. communication with guests).

Zoo Keepers at Australia Zoo continually work toward providing improved facilities and care for their animals. They do this with enthusiasm and motivation towards their individual learning, training and development of their overall performance.

Responsibilities include:
  • To have read and understood department procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain proper cleaning procedures.
  • Basic husbandry and hygiene practices.
  • Have a basic knowledge of the species natural history.
  • Aware of and ability to undertake detailed animal record keeping.
  • Understand the importance of observing and documenting animal behaviour and how that relates to animal health.
  • Prepare diets, and gain knowledge on animal nutrition.
  • Form a brief understanding of each of the animals’ personalities, and promote a good relationship with assigned animals.
  • Form a brief understanding of animal handling procedures.
  • Form brief understanding of assigned animal training.
  • Learn introduction process with assigned animals.
  • Work within the guidelines of health and safety procedures to ensure animal, personal and visitor security and safety.
  • Follow direction of senior keepers in a safe and secure manner.
  • Must have a basic understanding of Quarantine Protocol.
  • Encourage good team environment within and across teams.
  • Form good communication skills with public.

Position Description: As a Crocodilian/Reptile Keeper, you will have primary responsibility for the care and well being of animals under your supervision. Zoo keepers must also be understanding and sensitive to the needs of the animals under their care. They are responsible for the animal’s exhibits, involved with maintenance and landscaping, and presenting at daily demonstrations. Australia Zoo Crocodilian/Reptile Keepers are dedicated to conservation issues and animal welfare.

  • Undertaking cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures
  • Assist with the planning, development and construction of animal enclosures
  • Conduct animal health checks
  • Prepare food and conduct feeding of animals in accordance with diet requirements, feeding schedule, and procedures
  • Maintain records of observations and reports on animal behaviour and breeding
  • Conduct environmental and enclosure safety checks
  • Undertake animal enrichment programs
  • Provide a high standard of customer service
  • Undertake public speaking and/or delivering shows
  • Work within the guidelines of health and safety procedures to ensure animal, personal and guest security
  • Commitment to Australia Zoo’s confidentiality and privacy policies

This position requires long term commitment working alongside management to further develop display areas, breeding programs and conservation efforts.

Position: Ungulate Keeper - (6 month full time contract, to cover maternity leave)

Monarto Zoo is part of Zoos SA and is South Australia’s open range zoo located 70 km from Adelaide’s CBD. It is gaining a well-deserved reputation as a leader in conservation of endangered species and is in the process of further enhancing the visitor experience with several projects in development at both Monarto and Adelaide Zoos. Zoos SA has a progressive conservation theme based on teamwork and a commitment to achieve the Society’s Aim and Objectives.

Under general supervision and within specified guidelines, perform all keeping duties in a safe, efficient and effective manner. Undertake all husbandry tasks associated with the care and presentation of a range of mammals within the Ungulate team. Candidates must possess a wide range of Zoo Keeper skills including the highest possible standards of welfare, husbandry, species management, conservation research and enrichment. The ability to work well within a team and deliver public presentations is a requirement of this position. Basic maintenance skills and training and conditioning abilities are desirable.

Experience with ungulates in an open range setting and/or stock management experience would be preferred. Experience with other animal species would be desirable as there may be requirements to work within other animal teams.

This role is responsible for the effective management of the bird team and compliance with ongoing best practice animal husbandry. This includes acquisition, quarantine and daily care of the animals as well as conducting internal/external research and monitoring activities. A strong focus of this role will be to assist in creating and implementing a successful bird breeding program.

It is essential that you have:
  • demonstrated experience in captive bird husbandry management
  • demonstrated experience with animal life support systems including maintenance
  • diving qualifications or the ability to acquire certification (includes lifting up to 15kg)
  • previous experience with staff management and development
  • the ability to work on call
  • degree in zoological sciences or equivalent
It is also desirable that you have:

The Life Sciences Directorate provides the highest possible levels of health care, welfare, husbandry, sustainable species management and exhibit design for the animals under its care. The Directorate also provides a living example and educative example to engage visitors in conservation action.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and team orientated supervisor who has the ability to coordinate the day to day activities of the Carnivore/Ungulate section. You will have a leadership style that encourages and develops your team, provides advice and manages challenges in a calm and professional manner.
This position also requires your support with the management of project work requiring flexibility and negotiation where required in consultation with the Curator of Operations and Director of Life Sciences. The role is worked on a shift roster including weekends and public holidays and is a full-time contract position.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL
1. Certificate III in Zoo Keeping or Captive Animals or equivalent
2. Extensive experience in animal husbandry and management in an environment relevant to the role.
3. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and mentor a small team of professional staff to achieve organisational outcomes.
4. Good interpersonal skills with a proven ability to effectively communicate and interact at all levels.
5. Knowledge of and adherence to applying the principles of equity and safety in the workplace.

Position: Permanent Elephant Keepers - Exotic Fauna Precinct

Are you an experienced Elephant Keeper?
Do you have experience working in a free contact elephant program?
Do you have solid team work and communication skills?


Taronga Zoo is looking for a number of permanent Keepers to work in our Elephant free contact program within the Exotic Fauna Precinct. The Elephant Unit currently manages eight Asian Elephants on site at Taronga Zoo.

Successful candidates will demonstrate their ability to:
  • Work safely and effectively in a free contact program
  • Provide a high level of quality elephant husbandry and training
  • Teach and mentor junior staff
  • Work successfully and positively within a team
Our ideal candidates will have significant experience working free contact with elephants, possess a detailed knowledge of elephant behaviour and biology and will have good team work, communication and mentoring skills. Responsibilities:

Dolphin Cove (Cayman) Ltd is offering an exciting and engaging internship for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the marine mammal training field. This internship will provide candidates a unique opportunity to work very closely around Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and a variety of exotic birds, supervised at all times by professional and experienced trainers. Gaining not only marine mammal and bird training skills, but human care knowledge as well, successful candidates will have the opportunity to obtain firsthand experience by assisting with daily husbandry, training and play sessions, acquire and sharpen their public speaking skills, assist with lagoon and property maintenance as well as provide assistance for the bird team on a regular basis. Minor administrative work related to the company and the animals will also be required, as well as any other related duties asked of them.


Requirements:

Successful candidates should posses a positive attitude, good communication, observation and organizational skills, with the ability to accept direction, work well with others as part of a team as well as individually when required. An interest and general knowledge in marine life and animal conservation is highly recommended. Candidates must be willing to commit to an approximate 3 month internship plan including weekends and bank holidays. Financial stability must be provided, as proof that candidates can financially support themselves for an unpaid stay on Grand Cayman. There is a shared intern house available to rent at (maximum 3 people) approximately $600KYD per month, with utilities approximately $500KYD per month. Please note: The internship itself does not cost anything to participate in.

If selected, candidates must be financially stable to commit to an approximate 3 month stay on Grand Cayman (arriving on the 29th or 30th of the month, ready to start the internship on the 1st of the month – leaving the island on the 27th or 28th of the month, non negotiable) as well as obtain and provide a clean police report and medical insurance coverage.
